What is happening to Democracy?

May 12th, 2007 by deevious033

I’ve recently read a BBC News Article regarding the implementation of syariah law by civilian police in Tangerang, a district adjacent to DKI Jakarta. This new trend of civil disobedience (the concept of civilian police is baffling) needs to be addressed. For one, I do believe that the reasons that my grandparents and the people before them have fought the Dutch- Japanese-Portuguese occupation for three centuries were to have the ability to provide us with a sovereign country based on democracy. If a woman coming home from work is standing in the “wrong area”, then does that give the right for these civilian policemen to arrest her? Is this a democratic country where a woman standing by herself is reason for arrest?

The manipulated ideas behind this is that Tangerang residence wants to banish prostitution and alcoholic beverages in the district. I don’t have a problem with that, but I do have a problem with the concept of thuggish behaviour and unjust and unreasonable arrests by untrained men.

What happens to ‘Bhineka Tunggal Ika’ where the concept of pluralism is celebrated? We, as Indonesians and as people who care about the development of the country, need to address this problem. Maybe democracy is flawed as it seems to me that the majority of the people in the world are idiots. It is still the best system that we have, and that means that the woman standing in the corner of the street at night still has her right not to be arrested when she is not breaking the law.

weird keyboard

So Im in Tokyo and Im trying to figure out this weird keyboard. It doesnt help that im totally worn out from sleeping funky on the plane. It also doesnt help that I have ten hours to spend in the airport before flying another 16 hours or so…

To all y`all who I havent had the chance to say bye before leaving Jakarta.. `bye`. I will see you soon enough and for making the past coupla months memorable. Hopefully I will get the chance to be `penyok` with you guys again soon..

Now I will try not to sleep past the few hours that I will spend in the airport day room and maybe I will be lucky enough to have a decent shower to make me feel half human again as oppose to the ball of mess that I am right now.

Kap khun ka

So.. I’m in Bangkok and am totally exhausted from walking around all day. Well all week actually.. After all the temples and bike rides and tuk tuk and river boats and city train, I think I’ve tried all of the transportation methods of this city. Its pretty crazy and much like Jakarta, it is a sensory overload.

The ladies and ladyboys are pretty fascinating, though depressing at the same time. The creepy perverts are also interesting. Maybe the word I was looking for was disgusting.. and carcinogenic. One can’t help but think, is anyone really benefiting from this transactions…financially perhaps, but there is a void in these peoples eyes that can not be filled.

On a less depressing subject, food is great. Gustav has been continuously burning his lips with the super spicy chilli while I watch in horror. Mylanta has been the dessert of choice for us.. and the Thai ice teas are amazing…

hmmmm…. will dream about more food tonight.

later.

question

Ok. So I recently uploaded a bunch of photos into my blog photo album. Is there a way that I could put a link on the blog page to connect it to the album?
I didn’t go to a single computer class in university. How I got a B in that class is thanks to Zubin the Great.

I’m so excited! (tu tu tu tuuuuu tu) and I just can’t hide it……..( tu tu tu tuuuuu tu) i’m about to loose control and I think I like it………
I wish I could clarify the reason behind my exaltation, but then some people who are not supposed to know my plans for this weekend will know it. Then they would refuse to speak to me and I will be stoned and impaled when they see me.
Well, maybe not stoned or impaled.. scoffed would be a better word for it.

To add on to a desire of being read about, perused or viewed, I finally surcomed to this whole blogging thing. It seems that it is like and unlike a diary that people could read. The writer can’t fully disclose private information because it would be spread like rumors, but it won’t be a rumor because one could use the particular entry as evidence to nonbelievers. Well, I guess it is actually resemble my diary because I don’t usually put in any information in it whatsoever. Granted, the only one interested in my life enough to read my diary would be my mother, but still… the idea that a random person would pick it up and read it and find out my darkest secrets and tell everybody he/she knows… or even worse.. throw it away in a trash can as if it does not matter. Or maybe this blogging thing is suppose to encapture one’s stream of conciousness, examplified by my above ramblings.
